Rhymes of the White Crow: the Prelude
VN Gallery, Zagreb, Croatia
video, spacial installation, cyanotype prints
2021.
This was the first of three exhibitions I made as a further exploration and continuation of my film Rhymes of the White Crow. After exploring the film medium I wanted to see how that medium can be developed further into gallery space. How the imagery can be translated from moving animation to framed picture and spacial installation.
This particular exhibition in VN Gallery served as a prelude to the film, although it was created afterwards. In it I bridged together my previous artwork with the cinematic language of Rhymes of the White Crow.
The curator of the exhibition Jasmina Šarić wrote the text:
la poesie ne consiste pas a tout dire mais a tout faire rever. (Charles Augustin Sainte-Beuve)
How do I take you into this story? Because I know that one day I will have to take you out of it?
Stories can be understandable even without a prologue. Likewise, the prologue can be independent of the story. But he is there to prepare you for what awaits you. So here it is. The story always begins in me. What precedes it is me.
The one that is always in the making. It is placed in dreams, realized in me. Where exactly? It doesn't matter. After all, utopia and dystopia almost always resemble each other. The story has not yet been defined.
It has yet to develop. From trauma, from pain, from experienced beauty. It is imbued with feminine energy, the same energy that caused my ancestors to be accused of witchcraft.
Symbols are random. Nothing here is thought out. I let you feel it. Ideas are there to be free.
I create the ambience of dreams - or states of the soul? I create a post-apocalyptic and heavenly atmosphere at the same time. I will only come across hints of the character's psychological characteristics. We will never get to know it in depth.
I start from myself. I'm doing research. Avant-garde strongly motivates me. At some point, the story gives way to visual poetry. I repeat, do not bother to understand the symbols. It is more important to understand yourself. I provoke it with rituals, imposed and everyday. I throw it into loneliness. I'll let it feel the fear. Even if it falls under the domination of those who spread fear.
The plot will be literal. But instead of a resolution - a reconstruction.
Does a woman have to crumble into pieces in order to recreate herself? A woman is always in the making anyway.
I will outline the healing. I experience the transformative power of art. How to turn poetry into a film? How to put lyrics to what I see? Rhythm is created in the senses, so I want smells, touch, sound, taste. I add all this to the performance assembly. I will give the character features to the drawing.
It moves, develops and merges with other media. Now I have a hard time deciphering the intention that was there in the first place, with which I started.
Each viewing will be anew, and none will be final.
everything that is me is incomprehensible. (Louise Aragon)
